IB Physics HL B.3.7 Ideal gas internal energy

IB Physics HL B.3.7 Ideal gas internal energy
IB Physics syllabusFirst assessment 2025

Practise linking ideal-gas internal energy to temperature and amount of gas, including ratio, graph-gradient and particle-energy calculations.

How this is tested

  • calculate U or energy ratios using U = 3/2 nRT or U = 3/2 NkT, deciding whether n, N or T is the same
  • interpret a U-T graph for a monatomic gas, using its gradient to determine the number of moles in the sample
  • explain that ideal-gas internal energy is the total random kinetic energy of its particles, not potential energy
