IB Physics HL A.2.11 Buoyancy

IB Physics syllabusFirst assessment 2025
Practise using upthrust as the weight of displaced fluid to calculate buoyancy, compare floating cases and derive density relationships.
How this is tested
- calculate buoyancy from displaced mass or volume using Fb = ρVg, often showing a result in mN or N
- set weight equal to upthrust for floating objects to derive ratios such as submerged depth over height
- link displaced water to floating equilibrium to predict outcomes, such as no water-level change when ice melts
