C.3.12 (HL)—Single-slit diffraction Topic Practice

IB Physics syllabusPhysics SL/HLFirst assessment 2025
Practise reading single-slit intensity graphs and slit diagrams to find wavelength or slit width and explain pattern width changes.
How this is tested
- read the first minimum from an intensity-angle graph and use θ ≈ λ/b to calculate λ or slit width
- use central width = 2λx/b to calculate how the screen pattern changes when λ, b, or x is altered
- explain with paired rays on a slit diagram why the first minimum occurs when the path difference is λ/2
