A.4.7 (HL)—Point-mass moment of inertia Topic Practice

IB Physics syllabusPhysics SL/HLFirst assessment 2025
Practise finding point-mass contributions to moment of inertia by selecting the correct distance r from the axis and adding terms to a system.
How this is tested
- calculate I for small masses with I = Σmr^2, using the perpendicular distance from each mass to the axis
- add a particle term mr^2 to a rod’s given moment of inertia to obtain the total I of the combined system
- interpret what r represents in orbital or rod systems as the distance from the axis to the mass centre involved
