How to study IB ESS SL

IB ESS SL is best revised as connected environmental reasoning, not eight isolated folders. Use the syllabus map to move from the issue to a systems diagram, identify stocks, flows, feedback and stakeholders, then apply perspectives and sustainability to the evidence. Keep each case-study record compact: place, scale, process, stakeholder, outcome and limitation. The goal is to adapt evidence to an unseen source or essay prompt, not reproduce a memorised narrative.

Use Concept to rebuild the system, Mastery to retrieve terminology and examples, and the Question Bank to practise source use, data interpretation and judgment. After marking, classify the first lost mark as knowledge, system connection, evidence selection, perspective, case-study transfer or evaluation; repair that category and retry one matched task.

IB ESS SL assessment format

External assessment contributes 75% and the individual investigation contributes 25%. SL preparation should separate unseen case-study analysis, concise data application and one selected structured essay.

IB ESS SL questions

Choose one Topic when the weakness is known; otherwise attempt a short mixed set. Map the environmental system, retrieve one compact case study, apply it to source evidence and classify the first lost mark before choosing the next review action.

Store each example as place, scale, process, stakeholder, outcome and limitation. Practise adapting that compact record to unfamiliar sources and different command terms; do not memorise one long narrative that only answers a single rehearsed question.

Annotate the unseen source for claims, units, trends, stakeholders and limitations. Use comparative values when describing data, connect the evidence to relevant ESS knowledge, and keep evaluation specific to the inference or method rather than giving generic limitations.

The IB describes ESS as an interdisciplinary course combining sciences with individuals and societies. Its practical work, systems thinking, environmental evidence and social perspectives are integrated, so effective revision must practise both scientific analysis and justified evaluation.
