C.3.8—Two-source interference Topic Practice

C.3.8—Two-source interference Topic Practice
IB Physics syllabusPhysics SL/HLFirst assessment 2025

Practise explaining two-source patterns for light or sound, including fringe formation, resultant amplitude and energy redistribution.

How this is tested

  • use a slit or wave diagram to explain fringes: diffraction at each source, then superposition at the screen
  • calculate resultant amplitude at a point from path difference and the stated amplitudes of the two waves
  • explain zero intensity at a minimum by stating that energy is redistributed into maxima elsewhere on the pattern
