IB Physics SL B.1.17 Wien’s displacement law

IB Physics syllabusFirst assessment 2025
Practise using Wien's displacement law to link a star's temperature to the peak wavelength in its spectrum and interpret black-body curves.
How this is tested
- calculate λmax from temperature, or T from λmax, with correct conversion between m and nm
- interpret black-body curves by comparing peak wavelengths to decide which object has the higher temperature
- explain how a stellar spectrum gives temperature by locating the peak wavelength and applying λmaxT = 2.9 × 10^-3
