IB Physics SL A.3.2 Work as energy transfer

IB Physics SL A.3.2 Work as energy transfer
IB Physics syllabusFirst assessment 2025

Practise linking work to energy transfer, using force and displacement to decide when work is done and when it is zero.

How this is tested

  • compare force and displacement directions to decide if work is zero, for example orbital motion with a 90° angle
  • apply W = Fs cos θ or energy changes to find dissipated energy, then check the answer in J or base SI units
  • explain energy transfer chains where work leads to new stores, such as wind driving a turbine and generator
