Questions ask for named apparatus and diagram checks: choose a measuring cylinder or teat pipette, identify a pestle and mortar and repair reduced-pressure filtration setups.

How this is tested

  • Choose apparatus such as a teat pipette, measuring cylinder or pestle and mortar.
  • Label Buchner funnel, filter paper, side-arm flask and pump in suction filtration.
  • Identify missing filter paper, side arm or pump connection in filtration diagrams.

Question 3(c)(i)

[Maximum number: 1]

A student was given a 0.0200 moldm30.0200 \mathrm{~mol} \mathrm{dm}^{-3} solution of ammonium vanadate(V) and asked to prepare solutions containing vanadium ions in different oxidation states, and then to confirm the results.

The student decided to use the three different reducing agents shown.

 zinc  sulfur dioxide  tin \text { zinc } \quad \text { sulfur dioxide } \quad \text { tin }

After using tin as the reducing agent, the student carried out a titration with acidified potassium manganate(VII) to find out how far the vanadium had been reduced.

State a suitable method to remove the unreacted tin.
