A bidentate ligand forms two coordinate bonds from two donor atoms; use the structure to identify both lone-pair donors and the resulting coordination number.
How this is tested
- Classify bidentate ligands by two donor atoms or two dative bonds to the metal.
- Use ethane-1,2-diamine, carminic acid or thioglycolic acid structures as evidence.
- Combine ligand denticity with ligand count to find coordination number.
