CAIE IGCSE Biology 6.1.11 Limiting Factors of Photosynthesis

Practise identifying the limiting factor from graph gradients, plateaus and paired conditions, then justify whether light, carbon dioxide or temperature constrains the rate.

Syllabus

Course
Biology 0610

Exam points

  • identify light as limiting where increasing light intensity raises the rate of photosynthesis
  • recognise a plateau as evidence that another factor such as carbon dioxide concentration or temperature is limiting
  • compare curves or conditions and use a higher rate after increasing a factor as evidence that the factor was limiting

6.1.11—Explain the limiting factors question 1

[Maximum number: 3]

The effect of carbon dioxide concentration on the rate of oxygen production in an aquatic plant was measured.
- A lamp was used to keep the light intensity constant.
- The oxygen gas released by the plant was collected in a gas syringe.
- The plant was placed in water that was kept constant at 20C20^{\circ} \mathrm{C}.

Fig. 4.2 shows the results.

Explain the results shown in Fig. 4.2.
