B.2.8—Infrared absorption Topic Practice

IB Physics syllabusPhysics SL/HLFirst assessment 2025
Practise explaining how outgoing infrared is absorbed by greenhouse gases and how the returned radiation changes labelled energy flows.
How this is tested
- state that outgoing infrared is absorbed when photon energy matches molecular energy levels or vibration modes
- use a labelled flux such as I2 on an energy diagram to predict that more greenhouse gas makes I2 increase
- separate Earth's infrared absorption/re-radiation from reflection of incoming solar radiation
