E.3.4—Mass-energy equivalence Topic Practice

IB Physics syllabusPhysics SL/HLFirst assessment 2025
Practise mass-energy equivalence by converting nuclear mass defects into MeV, checking decay energies, and comparing energy released per unit mass.
How this is tested
- calculate Q from mass defect in u using 931.5 MeV u^-1, including electron mass if the equation needs it
- show a stated decay energy by subtracting initial and final masses, then convert Δm into MeV
- compare fusion and fission by calculating energy released per unit mass from converted mass defects
