IB Chemistry SL 3.2.9 Oxidation of organic functional groups

IB Chemistry syllabusFirst assessment 2025
Focus on organic oxidation questions by identifying oxidized products, choosing workable conditions and distinguishing which alcohols react.
How this is tested
- deduce products for RCHO: oxidation gives RCOOH, while reduction gives the primary alcohol RCH2OH
- choose conditions for maximum carboxylic acid yield, e.g. reflux an aldehyde with acidified KMnO4
- decide which alcohols oxidize with hot acidified K2Cr2O7: primary and secondary, but not tertiary
