Exam points

  • identify the oxidation-number increase and decrease, then scale them to equal electron transfer
  • balance oxygen with H2O and hydrogen with H+ when constructing half-equations in acidic solution
  • combine half-equations, cancel electrons and verify both atoms and total charge in the final equation

6.1.2—Changes in oxidation numbers to help balance question 1

[Maximum number: 1]

Chlorine is a reactive element. It forms many compounds.

Bleach is used as a cleaning product to kill bacteria. It is made by adding compounds like sodium chlorate(I), NaClO, to water.

Sodium chlorate(I), NaClO, reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce sodium chloride, water and oxygen gas.

Construct an equation for this reaction.
