IB Chemistry SL 3.1.4 pH scale
IB Chemistry syllabusFirst assessment 2025

Build confidence with pH calculations by converting between pH and [H+], then comparing strong acids and bases from their stated concentrations.

How this is tested

  • calculate pH from [H+], e.g. 0.0025 mol dm^-3 gives pH 2.60; pH 3.0 means [H+] = 1.0 x 10^-3
  • for a strong acid, take [H+] = concentration; 0.0010 mol dm^-3 HCl has pH 3.00 at 298 K
  • rank solutions by pH using acid/base strength and concentration, e.g. HCl, HNO3, NH3, and NaOH
