Edexcel IAL Chemistry AS Units in Calculations
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Subsidiary/Advanced Level in Chemistry, Issue 1, September 2017Chemistry XCH11/YCH11

Practise Edexcel IAL Chemistry units in calculations through density, mass and volume problems, including cm3 to dm3 conversions and rounded answers.

How this is tested

  • Use density units in mass-volume calculations, converting dm3 to cm3 before multiplying or dividing.
  • Report calculated masses or densities with appropriate g, cm3 or g cm-3 units and sensible rounding.

Question 4(a)(i)

[Maximum number: 1]

This question is about experiments involving ethanol.

Ethanol and water mix in all proportions. The percentage of ethanol by volume in ethanol-water mixtures can be found by comparing the density of the mixture to the densities of ethanol-water mixtures of known composition, at a constant temperature.

Table for Question 4(a)(i) — Edexcel A-Level Chemistry AS

Calculate the density of an ethanol-water mixture, sample A,5.00 cm3\mathbf{A}, 5.00 \mathrm{~cm}^{3} of which has a mass of 4.75 g .
