CAIE IGCSE Physics Field Strength and Line Spacing

Practise comparing magnetic field strength from field-line spacing, selecting the strongest or weakest position and justifying the choice from a diagram.

Syllabus
2026–2028
Course
Physics 0625

Exam points

  • identify the strongest field where magnetic field lines are closest together in the diagram
  • rank labelled positions from weakest to strongest by comparing the spacing of nearby lines
  • justify a selected point by linking closer line spacing to a larger force on a magnetic pole

4.1.11—Relative strength of a magnetic field question 1

[Maximum number: 1]

Fig. 6.1 shows a person using a magnetic window cleaner. The part on the outside of the window is attracted to the inside part through the glass window.
