Practise using transformer power equality to calculate input or output current, compare powers and find efficiency from V, I and power data.
Transformers are useful in the transmission of electricity.
The diagram shows a step-down transformer.

State the formula linking input power and output power for a transformer.
input power = output power
Or:
primary voltage x primary current = secondary voltage x secondary current
Accept:
- formula in words or symbols
- standard abbreviations, e.g. s, p, in, out, 1, 2
The step-down transformer has an input voltage of 275 kV and an output voltage of 230 V.
The transformer has an output current of 95 A.
Calculate the input current to the transformer.
Assume the transformer is 100% efficient.
input current = ............ A
- substitution
- rearrangement
- evaluation
Example:
- 275000 x Ip = 230 x 95
- Ip = 230 x 95 / 275000
- Ip = 0.079 A
Accept:
- 0.07945...
- 79.45... A scores 2 marks
Marking guidance:
- Deduct 1 mark for a power-of-ten error.
