Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry Investigation Planning Methods

Practise Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry investigation planning by choosing apparatus, extending methods and explaining safe experimental choices.

Syllabus
Issue 3 (2024)
Course
Chemistry 4CH1

Exam points

  • Extend an investigation by repeating it with different substances to test a deduction.
  • Choose suitable apparatus such as conical flasks and measuring cylinders for practical work.
  • Explain safety choices, including lids, cotton wool, goggles, fume cupboards and avoiding flames.

Investigation planning and methods question 1

[Maximum number: 1]

A student uses this apparatus to investigate the effect of heat on different solid metal carbonates.

Figure for Question Investigation planning and methods question 1 — Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry

This is the student's method.
- use a spatula to put some metal carbonate in the boiling tube
- fit the delivery tube into position
- pour some limewater into the test tube
- start a timer and immediately begin to heat the metal carbonate
- record the time when a change first occurs in the limewater

The student repeats the method using different metal carbonates.
When a metal carbonate is heated a reaction sometimes occurs.
The equation for the reaction is

metal carbonate → metal oxide + carbon dioxide

State how you should extend the investigation to see if your deduction is correct.

Investigation planning and methods question 2

[Maximum number: 1]

A student uses this apparatus to investigate the rate of reaction between marble chips and dilute hydrochloric acid.

Figure for Question Investigation planning and methods question 2 — Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry

The equation for the reaction is

CaCO3+2HClCaCl2+H2O+CO2\mathrm{CaCO}_{3}+2 \mathrm{HCl} \rightarrow \mathrm{CaCl}_{2}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}+\mathrm{CO}_{2}

During the reaction the mass of the contents of the flask decreases.

State the purpose of the cotton wool.
