CAIE IGCSE Physics 1.7.2.2 Recall/use: for mechanical working W =

Practise using W = Fd and W = ΔE with forces, distances, braking, slopes and energy changes in Paper 2 and Paper 4 contexts.

Syllabus
2026–2028
Course
Physics 0625

Exam points

  • calculate work done from force and distance moved in the direction of the force
  • use W = Fd with braking distance or a slope length, choosing the correct distance
  • link work done by a constant force to changes in kinetic or gravitational energy

1.7.2.2—Recall/use: for mechanical working W = question 1

[Maximum number: 2]

Fig. 3.1 shows an archer aiming an arrow at a target.

Fig. 3.1

The archer pulls back on the bow string, doing a total of 110 J of work. Her hand moves a distance of 0.45 m . The bow is bent and stores energy.

Show that the average force applied by the archer in pulling the string back is approximately 240 N .
