Exam points

  • Use equipotential maps to determine the direction of electric force, acceleration and initial velocity for positive or negative charges.
  • Model charged-particle motion in electric fields using potential energy, work, field direction and conservation of energy.
  • Use capacitor and equipotential geometry relationships, including perpendicular motion to equipotential surfaces, to interpret a field model.

IB Physics HL D 2 18 Hl Equipotentials and Electric Fields Questions question 1

[Maximum number: 1]

A metal sphere is charged positively and placed far away from other charged objects. The electric potential at a point on the surface of the sphere is 53.9 kV .

A small positively charged object moves towards the centre of the metal sphere. When the object is 2.8 m from the centre of the sphere, its speed is 3.1 ms13.1 \mathrm{~ms}^{-1}. The mass of the object is 0.14 g and its charge is 2.4×108C2.4 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{C}.

Comment on the angle at which the object meets equipotential surfaces around the sphere.
