How to study AP Biology
AP Biology rewards more than recalling terms. Use the eight-unit syllabus map to trace cause and effect across molecules, cells, heredity, evolution and ecosystems. For each Topic, explain the mechanism, read or construct a representation, identify variables and controls, analyse data and support a claim with evidence. These actions directly reflect the six College Board science practices.
Rebuild a weak mechanism in Concept, check retrieval in Mastery and apply it to unfamiliar stimuli in the Question Bank. After marking, label the first failure as concept, representation, experimental method, calculation, data interpretation or argumentation. Repair that one failure, then answer a matched question without notes so correction becomes usable exam skill rather than passive review.

AP Biology exam format
The current three-hour hybrid digital exam has two 90-minute sections worth 50% each: 60 Bluebook multiple-choice questions and six free-response prompts answered by hand.

AP Biology questions
College Board identifies the current AP Biology Course and Exam Description as effective Fall 2025. It organizes the course into eight commonly taught Units and six science practices; the Unit order is a recommended framework, not a mandatory teaching sequence.
Natural Selection has the largest official range at 13%–20% of the multiple-choice section. Cellular Energetics and Gene Expression and Regulation each carry 12%–16%. These are ranges for MCQs, not whole-exam percentages or permission to skip other Units.
It is hybrid digital. Students complete the 60 multiple-choice questions and view free-response prompts in Bluebook, then handwrite answers to the two long and four short FRQs in paper booklets during the second 90-minute section.
Practise long and short prompts separately using official released questions and scoring guidance. Identify the command, plan the claim and evidence, show graphing or quantitative work clearly, evaluate the experimental method and then rewrite the response after repairing the first missing reasoning link.
College Board provides subject-specific AP Biology reference information and permits approved calculators under its exam-day policies. Practise using both while showing setup, units and interpretation; a calculator result alone does not demonstrate the biological or statistical reasoning the question asks for.
