CAIE A-Level Mathematics 4.4.1 Newton's Second Law with Forces
Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics 9709 syllabus for exams in 2028, 2029 and 20302028–2030

Practise resolving tension, friction, thrust, resistance and weight and applying ΣF = ma to a constant-mass particle or vehicle moving along a line or inclined plane.

How this is tested

  • resolve perpendicular to contact first when friction depends on the normal reaction
  • sum signed forces along the direction of motion and equate the result to ma
  • solve the force equation for tension, thrust, braking force or acceleration with correct units

Question 1(a)

[Maximum number: 2]

A car of mass 900 kg is moving along a straight horizontal road against a constant resistance to motion of 350 N . At an instant when the car is moving at 15 ms115 \mathrm{~ms}^{-1} its acceleration is 0.25 ms20.25 \mathrm{~ms}^{-2}.

Find the driving force of the car's engine at this instant.
