CAIE A-Level Mathematics 4.2.1 Distance, Displacement, Speed and Velocity
Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics 9709 syllabus for exams in 2028, 2029 and 20302028–2030

Practise distinguishing scalar distance and speed from signed displacement, velocity and acceleration and calculating total distance, average speed or instants of rest.

How this is tested

  • add the magnitudes of all journey sections before dividing by total time for average speed
  • use signed velocity to determine direction while reporting speed as a non-negative magnitude
  • set v = 0 to find instantaneous rest and test whether the particle changes direction

Question 1(a)

[Maximum number: 1]

A crate is being pushed in a straight line along a horizontal surface by a force of magnitude 25 N inclined at 2020^{\circ} above the horizontal. The crate moves a distance of 12 m in 8 seconds with constant speed.

Find the constant speed of the crate.
