Practise metals-use questions by choosing extraction methods, explaining alloy hardness and linking metal properties to applications.
The box gives the names of some metals.

In the Earth, metals are found either in ores or as uncombined elements.
Explain which metal from the box is most likely to be found as an uncombined element.
explanation including the following points M1 silver
M2 because it is the least reactive (of the metals)
ALLOW it is very
unreactive

This is the order of reactivity of four metals.

The method used to obtain a metal from its oxide depends on the reactivity of the metal.
Two possible methods are:
Method 1: heating the metal oxide with carbon
Method 2: electrolysis
Explain which method should be used to obtain lead from lead(II) oxide, PbO.
Include an equation for the formation of lead in your answer.
- Method 1 / heating lead(II) oxide with carbon
- because lead is less reactive than iron, and iron is obtained from iron oxide by carbon extraction
−2PbO+C2Pb+COX2
Allow:
- carbon is more reactive than lead
- reverse arguments
−PbO+COPb+COX2−PbO+CPb+CO
The diagram shows the arrangement of the particles in a pure metal.

Metals are often made into alloys to make them harder.
Explain why alloys are harder than pure metals.
Draw a diagram to support your answer.
Explanation containing the following points
Pure metal:
M1 (particles/ions/atoms are same size in a regular arrangement so) layers can easily slide over each other
Alloy:
M2 diagram of alloy structure showing minimum of three layers with at least one different sized circle
M3 (having different sized particles/ions/atoms) disrupts/breaks up regular arrangement OWTTE
M4 so hard(er) for layers to slide over each other
REJECT molecules once only
ALLOW disrupts the lattice / layers / rows (of particles/ions /atoms)
ALLOW layers cannot slide over each other
IGNORE references to strength/breaking of forces/(metallic) bonds

Iron metal was discovered several thousand years ago. Iron is produced industrially from iron(III) oxide by extraction using carbon.
Sodium is a metal in Group 1 of the Periodic Table. Sodium was discovered by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1807. It is produced industrially by the electrolysis of sodium chloride.
Explain, using the reactivity series, why carbon can be used to extract iron from iron(III) oxide.
- carbon is above iron in the reactivity series
- carbon can remove oxygen from iron(III) oxide
Allow:
- carbon is more reactive than iron
- reverse arguments
- carbon can reduce iron(III) oxide
- carbon can displace iron from iron(III) oxide
Suggest why sodium was not discovered until 1807.
electricity had not been discovered
Ignore:
- electrolysis had not been discovered
This question is about metals.
Aluminium is malleable and can be easily shaped to make saucepans used for cooking food.
State two other properties of aluminium that make it suitable for saucepans used for cooking food.
1 ................................
2 ................................
Any two from:
- good conductor of heat / thermal energy
- does not react with food / affect flavour of food
- resistant to corrosion
- high melting point
- low density / lightweight / strong
Allow:
- does not corrode / rust
Ignore:
- non-toxic
- unreactive / inert
- references to recycling
- light
Magnalium is an alloy of aluminium and magnesium.
The diagram shows how the atoms are arranged in this alloy.

State what is meant by the term alloy.
a mixture of two or more elements, one of which is a metal
Accept:
- a mixture of two or more metals
Allow:
- combination for mixture
Reject:
- compound
- references to chemical bonding
Explain why magnalium is harder than aluminium.
An explanation that links together the following three points:
- the regular arrangement of atoms is distorted / disrupted
- because magnesium atoms are larger than aluminium atoms
- therefore it is more difficult for the layers to slide over one another
Allow:
- lattice / layers / rows of atoms are disrupted / distorted
- lattice / layers / rows of atoms are less regular
- magnesium and aluminium atoms are of different sizes
- layers cannot as easily slide over one another
Ignore:
- references to strength of metallic bonds
