Practise bond-energy explanation questions by comparing energy taken in to break bonds with energy released when new bonds form.
Gaseous ethanol is manufactured by reacting ethene gas with steam.
This is the equation for the reaction.
The equation shows the displayed formulae for the reactants and products.

The table gives the bond energies.

Explain, in terms of bonds broken and bonds made, why this reaction is exothermic.
An explanation linking either pair:
- more energy is given out when the bonds are made
- than is taken in when the bonds are broken
Or:
- breaking bonds is endothermic / takes in energy and making bonds is exothermic / releases energy
- more energy is released than taken in
Reject:
- if the answer states or implies that energy is required to make bonds, score 0
- if the answer states or implies that energy is released when bonds are broken, score 0
Marking guidance:
- The second mark depends on the first mark.
