Practise rationalising questions by multiplying by the conjugate, simplifying surd products and matching the requested exact surd form.
Answer parts (a) and (b).
Express 5−112 in the form yx+y, where x and y are integers.
Show each stage of your working.
5−112×5+15+1=5−112(5+1)=4125+12=35+3
Final answer:
35+3
M1 for multiplying by the conjugate. M1 for correct denominator/numerator simplification. A1; allow 3+35, but not 3(5+1).
