How to study Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics B

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics B uses two unequal papers, so practise two complementary modes. Paper 1 rewards rapid recognition across the full specification, but sufficient working still protects method marks. Paper 2 contains fewer, longer questions worth twice the qualification weight; map which intermediate results feed later parts and label every value. Build distinctive 4MB1 fluency through Algebra and Matrices rather than importing a Mathematics A checklist.

Reconstruct notation and procedures in Concept and retrieve them in Mastery. Apply each method in the Mathematics B Question Bank while showing the tested factor, algebraic division, matrix order, vector route or graphical construction. Classify the first error as knowledge, representation, dependency, algebra, accuracy or reading. Repair one objective, retest unseen, then combine it with a dependent Topic before attempting another long Paper 2 problem.

List the requested outputs and draw a short dependency chain before solving. Label every intermediate length, probability, coefficient or matrix and retain exact or unrounded values. If one result fails, continue consistently with the stated value so later reasoning remains visible and review can locate the first break.

Factor theorem, cubic division, algebraic fractions, inverses, determinants and matrix transformations

State the candidate factor and evaluate the polynomial before dividing. Multiply the quotient and divisor back to verify the cubic. For matrices, write dimensions, preserve multiplication order and test transformation matrices on basis vectors; locate sign and order errors before repeating the whole calculation.

Obey the required representation

Graphical solutions, suitable straight lines, functions and inverses, vector routes, constructions and geometric reasons

When the question specifies a graph or drawing method, keep that representation visible instead of replacing it with calculator algebra. State domain or range restrictions, label vectors and construction arcs, and attach each geometric reason to the step it justifies. Verify that the answer matches the requested form.

Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics B assessment

Mathematics B is single tier. Paper 1 is a 90-minute, 100-mark paper worth 33⅓%; Paper 2 is a 150-minute, 100-mark paper worth 66⅔%. Both allow calculators, cover the full specification and target grades 9–4, with grade 3 allowed.

Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics B questions

No. Mathematics B is offered through a single tier targeted at grades 9–4, with grade 3 allowed under Pearson's rule. It is not a Foundation/Higher route. Raw grade boundaries vary by examination series, so this page does not convert a fixed practice mark into a promised grade.

Both cover the full specification and carry 100 marks, but Paper 1 lasts 90 minutes, has around 26–30 questions and contributes 33⅓%. Paper 2 lasts 150 minutes, has around 11–12 longer questions and contributes 66⅔%, so it requires more sustained dependency management and multi-part reasoning.

Yes. A suitable calculator may be used on both papers, subject to Pearson restrictions. It does not replace visible method. Write equations, substitutions, algebraic division, matrix operations and intermediate values clearly, especially where a question demands working, a graphical method or reasons.

Paper 2 reproduces a formula from Appendix 4 at the end of a question when that formula is required. That rule does not mean every formula is provided, and it does not apply in the same way to Paper 1. Practise selecting relationships and checking dimensions before substitution.

Mathematics B is single tier and uses unequal papers rather than two equally weighted tier papers. Its distinctive content includes matrices, factor theorem and algebraic division of a cubic, while some Mathematics A features such as cumulative frequency are excluded.
