CAIE IGCSE Chemistry 7.1.10 Strong acid as an acid that is

Practise comparing strong and weak acids by dissociation, H+(aq) concentration, pH and reaction rate at the same concentration.

Syllabus

Course
Chemistry 0620

Exam points

  • define strong acids as completely dissociated and weak acids as partially dissociated in water
  • compare pH and H+(aq) concentration for hydrochloric acid and ethanoic acid
  • use magnesium reaction rates to infer stronger or weaker acid behaviour

7.1.10—Strong acid as an acid that is question 1

[Maximum number: 1]

Ethanol is manufactured by two methods:
method 1 fermentation of aqueous glucose
method 2 catalytic addition of steam to an alkene.

The catalyst in method 2 is phosphoric acid, H3PO4\mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{PO}_{4}. Dilute phosphoric acid is a weak acid which contains phosphate ions, PO43\mathrm{PO}_{4}{ }^{3-}.

State the meaning of weak in the term weak acid.
