Water pumping and distribution is the largest single consumer of electricity. In 2019, California was the top US producer of electricity from renewable sources. California imports 28% of its electricity from other states and Mexico. Its action plan is to produce 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.
