1.10 The Investigative Question Revisited and Data Collection question 1

[Maximum number: 1]

It has been reported that 1 in 3 older adults struggle to meet basic needs. A health statistician believes that this problem is even worse today and would like to create a study to test her belief. Which of the following would be an appropriate component for the health statistician's investigative question?

A

The parameter is the mean number of older adults who struggle to meet basic needs, and the alternative hypothesis is greater than 13\frac{1}{3}.

B

The parameter is the mean number of older adults who struggle to meet basic needs, and the alternative hypothesis is not equal to 13\frac{1}{3}.

C

The parameter is the proportion of all sampled older adults who struggle to meet basic needs, and the alternative hypothesis is greater than 13\frac{1}{3}.

D

The parameter is the proportion of all older adults who struggle to meet basic needs, and the alternative hypothesis is greater than 13\frac{1}{3}.

1.10 The Investigative Question Revisited and Data Collection question 2

[Maximum number: 1]

For the purpose of determining the value of its end-of-year inventory, a clothing store creates a list at the end of the year of every item currently in stock along with each item's wholesale price. Which of the following is the best description of the end-of-the-year activity?

A

An experiment, because the items are treatments and wholesale prices are responses.

B

An experiment, because the store does not know the total wholesale price of all the items.

C

A sample survey, because the store wants to estimate the value of all items for the entire year.

D

A sample survey, because the items currently in the store at the end of the year are a random sample of all items in the store for the entire year.

E

A census, because the wholesale prices of all items are listed.

1.10 The Investigative Question Revisited and Data Collection question 3

A dermatologist will conduct an experiment to investigate the effectiveness of a new drug to treat acne. The dermatologist has recruited 36 pairs of identical twins. Each person in the experiment has acne and each person in the experiment will receive either the new drug or a placebo. After each person in the experiment uses either the new drug or the placebo for 2 weeks, the dermatologist will evaluate the improvement in acne severity for each person on a scale from 0 (no improvement) to 100 (complete cure).

Each twin in the experiment has a severity of acne similar to that of the other twin. However, the severity of acne differs from one twin pair to another.

Identify the treatments, experimental units, and response variable of the experiment.
