How to study Pearson Edexcel International AS Chemistry
Pearson Edexcel International AS Chemistry tests whether you can move between chemical ideas, representations, calculations and evidence. Use the XCH11 syllabus map to connect amount of substance, atomic structure, bonding, energetics, group chemistry, kinetics, equilibrium and organic reactions. For each problem, identify the chemical model, write equations or structures precisely, show units and significant figures, explain the causal link and check whether observations or data actually support the conclusion.
Rebuild weak explanations, mechanisms and calculations in Concept and retrieve equations, conditions, practical decisions and measurement conventions in Mastery without notes. Apply them through the Question Bank in unfamiliar contexts, then repair the first incorrect formula, representation, curly arrow, structure–property link, apparatus choice or evaluation. Rehearse Core Practicals 1–8 as complete evidence chains rather than memorised recipes because WCH13 transfers the same reasoning to unseen methods and data.

Write the balanced equation and identify the requested quantity before selecting a relationship. Convert units, keep unrounded intermediate values, show substitutions and significant figures, then check magnitude and units. For experimental values, connect the calculation to measurements, uncertainty and likely heat or material losses.

Build explanations from particles or electronic structure through attraction, energy or reactivity to the observed property. Draw every bond, charge, lone pair and curly arrow from the correct electron source to destination. Add reagents, conditions and products, connect mechanism to observations or rate evidence, and use spectral features with molecular information to eliminate alternatives rather than naming a structure from one peak.

Enthalpy, collision reasoning, rates, reversible reactions, redox evidence and contemporary chemistry
Translate the unfamiliar context into the relevant particle, energetic or equilibrium model. Extract variables and trends, calculate where required, distinguish rate from yield and explain each change causally while retrieving Unit 1 bonding, equations or amount-of-substance knowledge when the question is synoptic.

Reconstruct purpose, apparatus, method, controls, risk management, expected observations and data processing for each practical. Justify precision and graph choices, distinguish random and systematic effects, pair each specific limitation with a feasible improvement and apply the same reasoning to an unseen WCH13 procedure.

Pearson Edexcel International AS Chemistry assessment
XCH11 consists of three externally assessed written units. WCH11 and WCH12 each contribute 40% of IAS, while WCH13 contributes 20%; together they form 50% of the full International A Level.

Pearson Edexcel International AS Chemistry questions
XCH11 contains Unit 1 WCH11, Unit 2 WCH12 and Unit 3 WCH13. Units 1–2 cover ten theory Topics, while Unit 3 assesses Practical Skills in Chemistry I. The full YCH11 International A Level also requires IA2 Units 4–6, which are not part of this AS course page.
WCH13 is a one-hour-20-minute external written paper worth 50 marks. It assesses how you apply procedures, apparatus, safety, observations, calculations, graphs, uncertainty and evaluation from Units 1–2 to familiar and unfamiliar practical situations. It is not a live bench examination, so memorising eight recipes alone is insufficient.
IAS owns Core Practicals 1–8: gas molar volume, Hess's Law, acid titration, standard-solution preparation, halogenoalkane hydrolysis rates, preparation of a chloroalkane, oxidation of propan-1-ol and analysis of inorganic and organic unknowns. WCH13 can transfer these skills to unfamiliar methods, so revise the reasoning and evidence behind each step.
Yes. WCH12 may require Unit 1 knowledge when a Unit 2 context depends on amount of substance, equations, atomic structure, bonding or introductory organic chemistry. Practise identifying the hidden prerequisite, retrieving it quickly and using it inside the new energetics, group, kinetic, equilibrium, mechanism or spectral problem rather than revising units in isolation.
At least 20% of IAS marks target Level 2-or-above mathematics in chemistry context. The component minima are 18 marks in WCH11, 18 in WCH12 and 6 in WCH13. Practise unit conversion, algebra, ratios, graphs, uncertainty and significant figures as part of chemical reasoning, not as a detached mathematics checklist.
