Titanium is a transition element in Period 4. It is commonly found as TiO2 in minerals.
Define transition element.
(d-block) element that forms one or more stable ions with incomplete d subshell / incomplete d orbitals
Identify two typical properties of transition elements.
1
2
variable oxidation states
- behave as catalysts
- form complex ions / complexes
- form coloured compounds / ions
Any two for one mark
The TiO2+ ion forms when TiO2 reacts with an excess of sulfuric acid.
TiO2+ can be reduced by zinc metal in acidic conditions to form a purple solution containing Ti3+(aq).
TiO2+(aq) is a colourless ion.
Suggest why.
Ti is in +4 oxidation state so no d electrons /d0OR Ti in TiO2+ has no d electrons /d0 [1]
cannot absorb photons / light in visible spectrum OR no wavelength / frequency absorbed in visible spectrum [1]
Acidified Ti3+(aq) reacts with oxygen dissolved in water as shown.
The standard reduction potential, E⊖, of O2+4H++4e−⇌2H2O is +1.23 V .
When aqueous citrate ions, C6H5O73−, are added to Ti3+(aq), the [Ti(C6H5O7)2]3−(aq) complex forms.
Explain, in terms of d-orbitals, why Ti3+ is able to form complex ions.
Ti3+ empty / vacant d orbitals can form dative bonds / accept a lone pair from a ligand
OR Ti3+ has vacant d-orbitals which are energetically accessible
Some reactions of TiO2 are shown in Fig. 3.1.
The anion, acac −, is a bidentate ligand.

Fig. 3.1
The titanium ions in TiF62− and Ti(acac)2Cl2 have a coordination number of 6 . State what is meant by coordination number.
the number of co-ordinate bonds being formed by the metal atom/ion
Write an equation for the formation of TiF62− from TiO2.
TiO2+6HF→TiF62−+2H2O+2H+ORTiO2+6HF→TiF62−+2H3O+
State what is meant by bidentate ligand.
species with two lone pairs (of electrons) [1] that form dative covalent / co-ordinate bonds to a central metal atom/ion [1]
Ti(acac)2Cl2 shows both optical and geometrical (cis/trans) isomerism.
Ti(acac)2Cl2 exists as three stereoisomers.
The structure of one stereoisomer of Ti(acac)2Cl2 is shown in Fig. 3.2.

Fig. 3.2
Complete the structures of the other two stereoisomers of Ti(acac)2Cl2.

mirror image of isomer I

trans isomer

The acac- anion is symmetrical.
Deduce which, if any, of stereoisomers 1, 2 and 3 in (d)(iv) are polar. Explain your answer.
isomer I AND cis isomer drawn by candidate ecf [1]
dipoles do not cancel / partial charges do not cancel [1]
Define a transition element.
forms (one or more) stable ions / compounds / oxidation states with incomplete / partially filled (3)d orbital(s) / d shell / d sub-shell
The 3d orbitals in an isolated gaseous Cu2+ ion are degenerate.
Define the term degenerate.
(orbitals) are at the same energy
State the colours of the aqueous solutions for the two copper(II) complex ions shown.
- [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+(aq)
- [CuCl4]2−(aq)
[Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+(aq) deep / dark / royal blue
AND
[CuCl4]2−(aq) yellow
Explain why aqueous complex ions of transition elements are usually coloured.
M1: d orbital(s) of different energy / d-d splitting occurs / d sub-shell splits
M2: electron(s) promoted / excited
M3: light / wavelength / frequency / photon absorbed AND complementary colour seen
When an excess of NH3(aq) is added to a solution of [CuCl4]2−(aq), [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+(aq) is formed.
State the type of reaction.
Complete the equation for this reaction. State symbols are not required.
type of reaction equation
[CuCl4]2−+……………………………..→[Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2++
M1: ligand exchange / replacement / substitution / displacement
M2: [CuCl4]2−+4NH3+2H2O→[Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2++4Cl−
The [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+ complex ion shows stereoisomerism.
Complete the three-dimensional diagrams in Fig. 1.1 to show the two different stereoisomers of [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+.

Fig. 1.1

M1: one correct 3D structure of [Cu(H2O)2(NH3)4]2+
M2: correct 3D stereoisomer structure of isomer 1
Deduce which stereoisomer in (d)(ii) is polar.
Explain your answer.
polar isomer
explanation
cis isomer AND dipoles do not cancel
The dianion P can act as a tridentate ligand.

Suggest how P can form three dative covalent bonds.
(two) oxygen and (one) nitrogen (can donate) three lone pair(s) of electrons (to the metal ion)
2 moles of dianion P,C4H5NO42−, react with 1 mole of aqueous cobalt(III) ions, [Co(H2O)6]3+ to form 1 mole of complex ion Q.
Deduce the formula and charge of Q.
[Co(C4H5NO4)2]−
