1.3.1—Use function notation

• Recognise and use function notation such as f(x), f: x -> lg x, f^-1(x), fg(x) = f(g(x)) and f^2(x) = f(f(x)).

• The notation f^2(x) will not be used with trigonometric functions.

Question 6(a)

[Maximum number: 5]

It is given that

f:x2x2 for x0g:x2x+1 for x0\begin{aligned} & f: x \rightarrow 2 x^{2} \text { for } x \geqslant 0 \\ & g: x \rightarrow 2 x+1 \text { for } x \geqslant 0 \end{aligned}

Each of the expressions in the table can be written as one of the following.

ffggfggff2g2f1g1f^{\prime} \quad f^{\prime \prime} \quad g^{\prime} \quad g^{\prime \prime} \quad f g \quad g f \quad f^{2} \quad g^{2} \quad f^{-1} \quad g^{-1}

Complete the table. The first row has been completed for you.
