IB Maths AI SL 4.8 Binomial distribution

IB Maths AI SL 4.8 Binomial distribution
IB Maths AI syllabusFirst assessment 2021

Students practise calculating binomial probabilities for exact, at-least, and at-most outcomes using n, p, and cumulative functions on the GDC.

How this is tested

  • calculate P(X ≥ k) or P(X ≤ k) by summing terms or using 1 − binomialcdf(n, p, k−1) on the GDC
  • identify n and p from context—e.g., ‘5 children’ gives n = 5; ‘75% chance of brown eyes’ gives p = 0.75
  • use a binomial model only when all four binomial conditions are satisfied
