CAIE IGCSE Physics Normal and Refraction Angles

Practise drawing the normal at a boundary and identifying incidence and refraction angles from that normal rather than from the material surface.

Syllabus

Exam points

  • draw the normal perpendicular to the boundary at the point where the incident ray arrives
  • measure incidence and refraction angles between each ray and the normal, not the surface

3.2.2.1—Terms normal, angle of incidence and question 1

[Maximum number: 2]

A ray of light is incident on a soap film. Fig. 5.1 shows a magnified image of a small part of the soap film. The ray of light is refracted as it enters the soap film.

The refractive index of the soap film is 1.28 .

On Fig. 5.1, carefully draw the refracted light ray in the soap film and label the angle of refraction.
