CAIE IGCSE Chemistry 9.2.1 Metal uses to properties: aluminium

Practise matching aluminium uses to physical properties, from low-density aircraft parts to overhead cables and food containers.

Syllabus
2026–2028
Course
Chemistry 0620

Exam points

  • link aircraft manufacture to aluminium's low density rather than conductivity or recycling
  • choose aluminium for overhead cables using both low density and good electrical conductivity
  • recognise aluminium in food containers and relate its use to resistance to corrosion

9.2.1—Metal uses to properties: aluminium question 1

[Maximum number: 1]

Iron is a transition element. Potassium is a Group I element.

Transition elements and Group I elements have some similar physical properties.

They can both:
- be hammered into a shape
- conduct electricity
- be stretched into wires.

Suggest why copper, rather than other transition elements, is used for wires which conduct electricity.
