Exam points

  • identify intermediates and catalysts by tracking species produced and consumed across mechanism steps
  • check that elementary steps add to the overall reaction and fit the energy profile

5.7.A—Identify the components of a reaction mechanism question 1

Answer the following questions about C2H4O\mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{4} \mathrm{O}.

(h) In the reverse reaction, the conversion of compound Z to compound X is catalyzed in the presence of trace amounts

of water. The catalyzed reaction is proposed to occur via the following two-step mechanism.

Step 1: \(\mathrm{Z}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \rightarrow \mathrm{Y}\) (slow)

Step 2: \(\mathrm{Y} \rightarrow \mathrm{X}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\) (fast)

i. Identify the intermediate in the mechanism, if any.
