Exam points

  • classify intermediates and catalysts from their appearances across elementary reaction steps
  • evaluate whether a proposed mechanism matches the overall stoichiometry and energy profile

5.7 Introduction to Reaction Mechanisms question 1

Answer the following questions about C2H4O\mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{4} \mathrm{O}.

(h) In the reverse reaction, the conversion of compound Z to compound X is catalyzed in the presence of trace amounts

of water. The catalyzed reaction is proposed to occur via the following two-step mechanism.

Step 1: \(\mathrm{Z}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \rightarrow \mathrm{Y}\) (slow)

Step 2: \(\mathrm{Y} \rightarrow \mathrm{X}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\) (fast)

i. Identify the intermediate in the mechanism, if any.
