Practise constructing probability distributions and calculating expectations for discrete random variables.
The numbers on the faces of a fair six-sided dice are 1,2,2,3,3,3. The random variable X is the total score when the dice is rolled twice.
Draw up the probability distribution table for X.
The probability distribution is
| x | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| P(X=x) | 361 | 364=91 | 3610=185 | 3612=31 | 369=41 |
Find the value of Var(X).
The mean is
E(X)=361(2)+4(3)+10(4)+12(5)+9(6)=314.
Therefore,
Var(X)=361(22)+4(32)+10(42)+12(52)+9(62)−(314)2=910.
