Leadership is the process of influencing people toward shared goals. It can rely on formal authority, expertise, relationships, vision or example—not only on a job title.
Leadership choices affect motivation, decision speed, participation and culture. Fit depends on task uncertainty, capability, risk and the need for commitment.
A leader may give a skilled team autonomy during routine work but provide clearer direction during a safety-critical crisis.
Popularity is not the same as effective leadership, and a manager can lead without relying on coercion.
