Practise fraction multiplication and division by converting mixed numbers, multiplying by reciprocals and showing enough working for proofs.

Exam points

Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before multiplying or dividing.
Change division by a fraction into multiplication by its reciprocal before simplifying.
Show enough fraction working to justify a given mixed-number result clearly.

Show that $4 \frac{2}{3} \div 1 \frac{1}{9}=4 \frac{1}{5}$

Example:
$\frac{14}{3}\quad\text{and}\quad\frac{10}{9}$ $\frac{14}{3}\times\frac{9}{10}$

OR:
$\frac{42}{9}\div\frac{10}{9}$

Example conclusion:
$\frac{14}{3}\times\frac{9}{10}=\frac{126}{30}=\frac{21}{5}=4\frac{1}{5}$
OR:
$\frac{14}{3}\times\frac{9}{10}=\frac{126}{30}=4\frac{6}{30}=4\frac{1}{5}$
OR:
$\frac{126}{27}\div\frac{30}{27}=\frac{126}{30}=\frac{21}{5}=4\frac{1}{5}$
