Practise IB Psychology SL/HL 3.3.8 by applying cognitive explanations concepts to exam-style questions.
Discuss how two or more cognitive factors influence human relationships.
Refer to the paper 2 assessment criteria when awarding marks.
The command term "discuss" requires candidates to offer a considered and balanced review of how two or more cognitive factors influence human relationships.
There are several approaches that can be taken to answer this question. Candidates may discuss:
- the social exchange theory of relationships
- Batson et al.'s (1981) empathy-altruism model of helping behaviour
- Kiesler and Baral’s (1970) study of attraction
- Baumeister and Bushman (1998) on aggression.
All aspects of the psychology of human relationships option may be addressed for this question (for example, social responsibility, interpersonal relationships, and/or violence).
Candidates may discuss a smaller number of cognitive factors in order to demonstrate depth of knowledge, or may discuss a larger number of cognitive factors in order to demonstrate breadth of knowledge. Both approaches are equally acceptable.
If a candidate discusses only one cognitive factor, apply the markbands up to a maximum of [11 marks].
