Developmental psychology studies behavior and mental processes across the lifespan. Researchers can organize development chronologically—what tends to happen and in what order—or use enduring themes to ask why a pattern appears and how it changes.

The same observation can be examined through several themes. If language ability changes with age, a researcher might ask whether the change is gradual or stage-like, how inherited and environmental factors contribute, and which language characteristics remain stable. Each theme changes the claim and evidence the researcher seeks.
These are not necessarily either-or answers. Development may show both stability and change, reflect both nature and nurture, and include gradual change in one process but stage-like change in another.

To study memory across adulthood, a cross-sectional design could compare groups of younger and older adults now. A longitudinal design could retest one group as its members age. The first shows a current difference between age groups; the second directly tracks change within individuals.
Choose the design from the question:
A difference between age groups is not automatically evidence that aging caused the difference. Research design determines which conclusion is supported and which alternative explanations still need control.
