Sex and gender can influence development through socialization. Repeated messages, models, and expectations in a social environment help form gender schemas—organized expectations about which roles or behaviors are associated with gender.
A useful causal chain is:
For example, consistently using only male pronouns when describing a role can communicate that the role is expected to be male. The language cue may reinforce a gender schema even when no one explicitly states the expectation.
Influence is not determination. A socialized expectation can shape development without dictating every individual's identity, interests, abilities, or behavior. The evidence supports a learned association, not a claim of inevitable difference.
