The quadratic equation

has roots $\alpha$ and $\beta$
Without solving the equation,

determine the value of $\alpha^{2}+\beta^{2}$

$\alpha^{2}+\beta^{2}=(\alpha+\beta)^{2}-2 \alpha \beta$
