Practise vector-geometry questions by writing routes in terms of a and b, comparing coefficients and using ratios on line segments.
Figure 1 shows triangle OAB in which OA=4a and OB=8b
P is the point on OA such that O P: O A=1: 4
Q is the point on OB such that OQ : OB = 1 : m where m is a constant.
PQ=αAB, where α is a scalar.
Using vectors, find the value of m and the value of α.
PQ=−a+m8bAB=8b−4a−a+m8b=α(8b−4a)
Comparing coefficients:
α=41,m=4

Given that PR is parallel to OB,
find the value of n.
For PR to be parallel to OB, the coefficient of a in PR is zero:
3−n4=03=n4n=34
OR, since PR=6b,
n8=6n=34
