Oxytocin is a peptide hormone and neuromodulator involved in social recognition, affiliation and caregiving. It can alter the salience of social cues, but its effect depends on receptors, dose, prior experience, relationship and social context.
Evidence may compare oxytocin administration, naturally occurring levels or behaviour, and those designs support different claims. A change in trust or attention after administration suggests involvement in the pathway; it does not prove that endogenous oxytocin alone creates love, attachment or a stable relationship.
In a safe interaction with a familiar partner, heightened attention to positive social cues could support closeness. In a threatening or competitive setting, the same social salience may strengthen caution or ingroup preference, showing why messenger-plus-context is more accurate than a universal prosocial effect.
Oxytocin is not a ‘love chemical’, and a hormone–behaviour association is not a complete causal explanation. State the interpersonal outcome, measurement or manipulation, context, alternative pathways and ethical limits.
