A correlational survey measures co-variation, not causation

A correlational study measures two or more variables without manipulating them and tests whether they vary together. Surveys can efficiently collect self-report data, but wording, sampling and common-method bias shape the result.

A positive association means high values tend to accompany high values; a negative association means the reverse. Directionality and third variables remain open, so a correlation cannot establish which variable caused the other.

A survey might find that social-media hours correlate with loneliness. Loneliness could increase use, use could affect loneliness, or both could reflect stress; longitudinal or experimental designs are needed to narrow the explanation.

A significant correlation is not a causal conclusion and a non-significant result is not proof of no relationship. Report the sample, measure, range and uncertainty.

To conduct the practical: define a focused question about attraction, love, relationship patterns or cross-cultural difference; operationalise each construct; choose a sampling route; write neutral items with balanced response options; avoid double-barrelled, leading and ambiguous wording; pilot for comprehension; obtain informed consent and anonymity; administer consistently; code responses using a pre-planned scheme; then report descriptive patterns or correlations with non-causal, sampling and self-report limits.
